Lots of History
Carson City was actually named for the Carson River, which was named for Kit Carson, John Fremont's scout during the 1840s.
The world's largest silver find, the Comstock Lode, was in nearby Virginia City in 1859, followed a few years later by another major strike in 1873 called the Big Bonanza. During the 1860s and 1870s this area was one of the world's richest, with gold and silver mining the booming industry.
Samuel Clemens, more commonly known as Mark Twain, arrived in 1862 to work as a reporter for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise and often reported on the goings on in the state legislature. A lot has changed since those days but Carson City has retained its small town charm and western heritage. Come see for yourself!
